Pumpkin Spice Creep: the year it stopped
By Paul Tanswell · Published September 9, 2026 · Dataset 2026-09-09
Everyone jokes that pumpkin spice season starts earlier every year. Nobody had written the dates down. So we reconstructed every nationwide pumpkin launch at Starbucks, Dunkin', Krispy Kreme and 7-Eleven since 2003 from the chains' own announcements, the coverage of the day and the Wayback Machine, two sources per date, and measured the creep. The joke was right for twenty years. Then, in 2023, the chains hit a wall in the third week of August and have stayed there.
The finding
Pumpkin spice season got earlier for twenty years and then stopped. Across 54 dated launches, the composite Starbucks and Dunkin' trend runs 0.81 days earlier per year since 2003 (95% interval ±0.32), which is about 19 days over the whole run. Since 2020 the same fit is -0.20 ±1.32 days per year: flat. Every chain's earliest-ever launch came in 2023 or 2024 (7-Eleven Aug 1, Krispy Kreme Aug 7, Dunkin' Aug 16, Starbucks Aug 22) and none has beaten it since. In 2026 the lineups opened between Aug 11 (Krispy Kreme) and Aug 27 (7-Eleven), 42 to 26 days before the autumn equinox.
Key findings
- The Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte returned on Aug 25, 2026, 28 days before the autumn equinox and three days later than its earliest-ever launch on Aug 22, 2024.
- Every chain's earliest-ever pumpkin launch was in 2023 or 2024: 7-Eleven on Aug 1, 2023, Krispy Kreme on Aug 7, 2023, Dunkin' on Aug 16, 2023 and Starbucks on Aug 22, 2024. None has launched earlier since.
- Fitted across all dated years, Starbucks and Dunkin' launches moved 0.81 days earlier per year (±0.32); fitted on 2020 onward the trend is -0.20 ±1.32 days per year, which is no trend at all.
- Krispy Kreme is the fastest creeper in the dataset at 2.5 days earlier per year (±1.6), moving from early-September launches (and a one-day stunt in 2017) to a full August lineup from 2022.
- 7-Eleven launched on Aug 1 in 2023, the earliest date of any chain in the study, and has since retreated by 27 days to Aug 27.
- The first chain to launch in August was Starbucks, on Aug 28, 2007; it then returned to September launches until 2018.
- At the pre-2020 composite rate, a July 4 pumpkin spice launch would arrive in the year 2153. At Krispy Kreme's own rate it would arrive around 2041. Neither is a forecast, because the 2020s data does not continue the trend.
- Every date is backed by two independent citations (a chain announcement or contemporaneous report plus a second report or an archived homepage bracket). 8 of the 62 chain-years are shown as gaps, month-or-range dates, or the 2003 test market, rather than estimated.
Chain by chain
The creep rate is a straight-line fit of days-before-equinox on year, with a 95% interval, on each chain's full-lineup dates. One-day stunts and the 2003 test market are excluded from the fits. Read the two rate columns together: the long-run rate is the twenty-year joke, the 2020s rate is what is happening now.
| Chain | Dated years | Earliest ever | 2026 | Creep, all years | Creep since 2020 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starbucks | 19 | Aug 22 (2024) | Aug 25 | +0.5 ±0.4 d/yr | +0.1 ±1.4 d/yr |
| Dunkin' | 14 | Aug 16 (2023) | Aug 19 | +1.2 ±0.6 d/yr | -0.5 ±2.1 d/yr |
| Krispy Kreme | 11 | Aug 7 (2023) | Aug 11 | +2.5 ±1.6 d/yr | +4.0 ±4.8 d/yr |
| 7-Eleven | 7 | Aug 1 (2023) | Aug 27 | -0.4 ±6.2 d/yr | -0.0 ±9.7 d/yr |
Positive means earlier each year. McDonald's has only two verifiable national dates (2016 and 2025) and is kept in the dataset as the negative finding rather than fitted.
The extrapolation we are not making
The brief for this study asked for the obvious gag: at this rate, when does pumpkin spice reach the Fourth of July? At the composite rate before 2020 the answer is the year 2153, which tells you how gentle the Starbucks and Dunkin' creep actually was. Krispy Kreme is the one chain that moved fast, and at its rate July 4 arrives around 2041. We are publishing both numbers to be clear that neither is a forecast. Every chain's 2020s fit is flat, and 7-Eleven, which got to August 1, went back to August 27.

Questions people actually ask
When does the Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte come back in 2026?
The Pumpkin Spice Latte returned to US Starbucks stores on Aug 25, 2026, announced by Starbucks on August 3, 2026. That is one day earlier than 2025 and three days later than the earliest-ever launch on Aug 22, 2024.
Is pumpkin spice season getting earlier every year?
It did, and then it stopped. Fitted on every dated launch since 2003, the Starbucks and Dunkin' composite moved 0.81 days earlier per year. Fitted on 2020 onward it is -0.20 ±1.32 days per year, which is flat. Every chain's earliest launch on record is from 2023 or 2024.
Which chain launches pumpkin spice first?
In 2026, Krispy Kreme on Aug 11, 2026, then Dunkin' on Aug 19, Starbucks on Aug 25, 7-Eleven on Aug 27. The earliest launch in the whole dataset is 7-Eleven's Aug 1, 2023, repeated in 2024, before it moved back to late August.
How many days before autumn does pumpkin spice season start?
In 2026, between 42 and 26 days before the September equinox, depending on the chain. Krispy Kreme's Sep 6 launch is the longest lead. The equinox itself is computed astronomically for each year, in US Eastern time.
What was the earliest ever Pumpkin Spice Latte launch?
Aug 22, 2024, when Starbucks brought the fall menu back 31 days before the equinox. The drink's very first appearance was a 100-store test on October 10, 2003; it went nationwide in the autumn of 2004.
How we did this
Launch dates come from chain press releases and contemporaneous reporting, each backed by a second source or by a Wayback Machine bracket of the chain's homepage (last capture without pumpkin, first with it). Where a chain edited a page after the fact, the archived original is cited. Days before the equinox use the astronomical equinox for each year in US Eastern time. Trends are least-squares fits with 95% intervals; the Google Trends layer in the original brief was dropped because the official API is gated. Every judgment call is in the full methodology.
