How much caffeine is in a shot of espresso?

A typical single shot of espresso contains

108mg

of caffeine per single shot as bought: the median of 124 shots measured in 2 studies (Crozier et al., 2012; Ludwig et al., 2014). Both studies come from one Glasgow research group. Shots ranged from 51 to 322 mg and from 13 to 104 ml (0.4 to 3.5 fl oz). USDA's reference figure is 64 mg per 30 ml (1 fl oz).

Key findings

124 single espressos bought in cafes in Glasgow, Parma and Pamplona measured 51 to 322 mg of caffeine per shot as served, with a median of 108 mg.
122 of the 124 shots were above USDA's reference figure of 64 mg per 30 ml (1 fl oz).
Shots were not a standard size: the measured singles ran from 13 to 104 ml (0.4 to 3.5 fl oz), and where Ludwig and colleagues (2014) recorded the dose, cafes used 5 to 18 g of coffee per shot.
Starbucks single espressos bought in Glasgow measured 51 to 79 mg across 5 purchases of 27 to 33 ml (0.9 to 1.1 fl oz); Starbucks declares 75 mg for its Solo, 0.75 fl oz (22 ml).
The only measured double shots are three made in a lab, not bought: 152 to 174 mg from 18.1 to 20.4 g of coffee in 22 to 23 ml (0.7 to 0.8 fl oz).

Single, double, ristretto and lungo

Every cafe shot in the chart was sold as a single, but the amount of ground coffee behind it varied. Where Ludwig and colleagues (2014) recorded the dose, it ran from 5 to 18 g. In Glasgow, University Cafe and Artisan Roast used 18 g for a single, and their shots still differed: 180 to 276 mg at University Cafe and 99 to 116 mg at Artisan Roast.

For double shots the data is thin. Ludwig and colleagues (2014) also made three espressos in the lab from 18.1 to 20.4 g of coffee, a dose the paper calls typical of a double. Pulled to 22 to 23 ml (0.7 to 0.8 fl oz), they measured 152 to 174 mg. They show what a double dose gave in the lab, not what cafes serve, so this page does not pool them with the cafe singles. Starbucks declares 150 mg for its Doppio, 1.5 fl oz (44 ml), twice the 75 mg it declares for the Solo.

A ristretto is pulled shorter than a normal shot and a lungo longer. None of the studies behind this page measured either, so it gives no caffeine figure for them.

How many ounces is a shot of espresso?

There is no fixed size. The 124 single shots measured for this page ran from 13 to 104 ml (0.4 to 3.5 fl oz) as served. Starbucks declares its Solo at 0.75 fl oz (22 ml) and its Doppio at 1.5 fl oz (44 ml).

A single is often described as 30 ml (1 fl oz) and a double as 60 ml (2 fl oz). Those are conventions, not measurements. USDA's espresso figure, scaled to 30 ml (1 fl oz), is 64 mg.

How much caffeine is in a shot of espresso?

The median of 124 single espressos bought in cafes and measured in a lab is 108 mg per shot as served. The shots ranged from 51 to 322 mg, and from 13 to 104 ml (0.4 to 3.5 fl oz). The figures come from 2 studies (Crozier et al., 2012; Ludwig et al., 2014). Both studies come from one Glasgow research group. USDA's reference figure is 64 mg per 30 ml (1 fl oz).

How much caffeine is in a double shot of espresso?

The only measured doubles in our data are three espressos that Ludwig and colleagues (2014) made in their lab from 18.1 to 20.4 g of coffee, a dose the paper calls typical of a double shot. Pulled to 22 to 23 ml (0.7 to 0.8 fl oz), they measured 152 to 174 mg, with a median of 165 mg. They were not bought in cafes. Starbucks declares 150 mg for its Doppio, 1.5 fl oz (44 ml).
