Fellow Opus 2 first look

First look · published 2026-10-01

Fellow's second all-purpose grinder, shipping from October 2026 at $199.95. It moves from the original Opus's 40 mm burrs to 48 mm conical burrs, replaces the old outer dial and inner adjustment ring with one stepless dial, and adds an ionizer, an automatic stop and a dedicated espresso cup, all aimed at the static and retention that reviewers of the first Opus kept running into.

How we score →

On paper this is the grinder the first Opus should have been, at the same price. Bigger burrs, one stepless dial and an ionizer go straight at what owners complained about, and stepless adjustment for $199.95 puts it head to head with the Encore ESP, which still clicks. That is a real fight now: stepless and single-dose against stepped and repairable for life. What we cannot tell you yet is whether it works, because the first Opus also looked good on paper and then held on to grounds and threw static. So this score is provisional. If you need a grinder this week, the Encore ESP is the proven choice. If you can wait a month for owners to weigh their doses, wait, because if Fellow's retention claim holds, this becomes the easier grinder to live with.

This is a first look based on the published specifications. We will update the score and verdict once enough owners report back.

What works

  • +Stepless at $199.95, the same money as the Baratza Encore ESP's 40-step collar, so an espresso setting can land exactly where the shot needs it rather than between two clicks
  • +The espresso cup fits both 54 mm and 58 mm portafilters and comes in the box, so it suits a Bambino and a Gaggia alike without an adapter
  • +Built for single dosing, with a 100 g load bin, an automatic stop and claimed near-zero retention, which is the workflow that cost $629 in a Niche Zero
  • +Two-year warranty, against one year on the Encore ESP

The catch

  • −Every number that matters here is Fellow's own until owners measure it, and retention, static and espresso consistency are exactly where the first Opus fell short
  • −Plastic throughout, and the $249.95 colourways add a wood lid and a metal dial rather than a sturdier body
  • −Conical burrs, so a filter-only household gets more clarity from Fellow's own 64 mm flat-burr Ode Gen 2, which cannot grind for espresso
  • −Sold out on Fellow's site at launch, with two of the wood colourways not shipping until late November and December

What owners say

Owner feedback is pending. This machine is new, so there is little real-world experience to summarise yet. We will add the consensus loves, gripes and longevity reports here as owners report back, and update the verdict and score then.
