Smeg

Smeg ECF01 review

Updated 2026-06-13

Smeg's retro-styled manual pump machine, matching the 1950s look of its fridges and kettles, with a 15 bar pump, a Thermoblock heater and a steam wand. It takes ground coffee or ESE pods.

Our opinion

6.1/10

Style-led, and honest about it

How we score →

Nobody buys a Smeg to chase the perfect shot, and that is fine. You buy it because it looks gorgeous on the counter, and it happens to make a perfectly good milk drink while it sits there being pretty. If the colour and the curves matter to you, pay the design tax with a clear conscience. If only the cup matters, a Gaggia Classic costs less and goes further.

What works

  • +Distinctive retro design in a wide range of colours
  • +Compact footprint with a 1 L removable tank
  • +Steam wand plus ESE pod option keeps it flexible

The catch

  • You pay a premium for the styling versus the internals
  • Pressurised baskets and no grinder cap how far technique can go

What owners say

Recurring themes from public owner discussion (published reviews, owner forum discussion, retail reviews), paraphrased. Checked 2026-06-13.

Comes up as praise

  • +The look is the whole point, and it delivers on a worktop
  • +Heats fast and is genuinely simple to operate day to day
  • +ESE pod compatibility is handy for low-effort mornings

Comes up as gripes

  • Owners note the price reflects the design more than the performance
  • Plastic portafilter and pressurised baskets disappoint anyone wanting to progress
